Bozkov dolomite caves

Are you attracted by a mysterious underground world, full of stalactites, corridors and lakes? Then visit the only accessible caves in the north of Bohemia.
The Bozkov dolomite caves are the only ones in Bohemia formed by calcareous dolomite. They are located one kilometer north of the village Bozkov. In 1999, they were declared a national natural monument
The caves were formed for hundreds of thousands of years by the gradual dissolution of calcareous dolomite with weakly acidic water. Tectonic movements and strong earthquakes also contributed to their appearance. The water also created honeycomb and reticulated structures, lace ornaments and shelves.

Interesting facts Bozkov dolomite caves

The first cave spaces were discovered in 1947 after the blasting of limestone in a local quarry. A cavity appeared, which local enthusiasts gradually began to uncover. Deep below the surface, they came across underground passages and cavities, and after 10 years, they worked their way to today's entrance to the cave. The first stalactite decoration was found here. A year later, in 1958, speleologists found another part of the system, a new cave with an underground lake - the Lake Dome. Since 1968, the caves have been open to the public.

Don't forget to dress properly for a tour of the caves, as the temperature is constant at 7.3 ° C. Immediately after entering the caves, which lie at an altitude of 452 m, you will fall a few meters below the ground. You will be the first to see the thin stalactites in the New Cave. From here you will walk through the Midnight Cave and the Za prahem cave through the red illuminated Hell to the Robber's Cave. It is dotted with a number of smaller stalactites of various shapes. This is followed by Swan Lakes, which are unique here. Their crystal clear, blue-green water floods the underground caves of the lower floors. You will walk through a spooky connecting tunnel to the Old Cave, from where the entire Bozkov underground was discovered in 1947. Through the Maze you will walk to the November Cave, where you can admire various ceiling and floor stalactite decorations. The most interesting are the so-called Elephant Ears. The last stop on the route is the largest underground lake in Bohemia, the Lake Dome.

The total length of the Bozkov Dolomite Caves circuit is 350 m and can be handled even by smaller children who are not afraid of darkness and cave elves.
The caves are inhabited by thousands of bats, the most abundant of which include the eared bat, the great bat, the black bat and the small horseshoe bat.
