Chateau Velké Meziříčí

The first indirect mention of the Velké Meziříčí castle comes from the first half of the 13th century. The lords of Lomnice, who owned Velké Meziříčí until the end of the 14th century, also gave the town their emblem: seven white eagle feathers in a red field tied with a gold ribbon. At the beginning of the 15th century, Lacek z Kravař became the owner, who in 1408 granted the town full city rights.

Interesting facts Chateau Velké Meziříčí

Another of the owners, Jan the Younger from Meziříčí, began the reconstruction of the castle into a Renaissance chateau, which was completed in 1578 by Alena Meziříčská from Lomnice. The castle underwent further alterations in the 18th century, as it burned down during a large fire in 1723 under the lords of Ugarte. The last sale took place in 1735, when the chateau was bought by Duke Leopold Holštýnský. Since then, the castle could only be acquired by inheritance. In 1995, the castle was returned to the Podstatzka-Lichtenstein family as part of restitution.

The Velké Meziříčí Museum is now located in the chateau.
