Nové Město n. Metují (chateau)

Let yourself be carried away by the beauty of interesting buildings and head to Nové Město nad Metují, where you will find a Baroque chateau on a rocky promontory above the river. The chateau is located directly on the square and the town with the castle was founded around 1501 by Jan Černčický of Kácov. The castle is separated from the city by a moat.
The castle was hit by fire and Černčický decided to sell it. The new owner became the Moravian nobleman Vojtěch of Pernštejn, who took care of the late Gothic appearance of the building in 1528.

Interesting facts Nové Město n. Metují (chateau)

Later, the estate was owned by the Evangelical John of Štubenberg, and during the years 1558 -1568 the castle was renovated in the Renaissance style and expanded by two wings. At this time, the castle with an irregular courtyard already had the appearance known from today. After the White Mountain, the confiscated property fell to Walter Leslie, and in 1654 further Baroque reconstructions took place.

During the 19th century, no one cared about the occupancy of the castle and it slowly fell into disrepair. It was in poor condition at the beginning of the twentieth century by the industrialist Cyril Bartoň from Dobenín and invited a real master - Dušan Jurkovič - to reconstruct it. He took great care to preserve the historical value and to design a garden with wooden buildings.

During your visit you can go on one of several circuits - a tour of the castle, a tour of the land, the castle garden and the tower. You can see the period interiors, which include Baroque stucco, Renaissance murals, art collections, a Baroque castle chapel. The garden has the style of Italian Renaissance and Baroque gardens. And don't forget to look at masterpieces by J.V. Mysbek, František Bílek, J. Štursa and others. In front of the castle, notice the Baroque statues of dwarves by Matyáš Braun, which Jurkovič had placed here and they are caricatures of manorial officials. At the bottom of the castle garden you will find the Máselnice tower, where you can ascend and see the surrounding countryside.
