State Castle Bezděz

Bezděz is a ruin of an impregnable castle on the Velký Bezděz hill near Mácha's lake. Our great poet Karel Hynek very much visited Mácha Bezděz and even this romantic ruin became the subject of his work Večer na Bezděz. Bedřich Smetana also found inspiration here.

Bezděz deserved the attribute of King of Castles and it is no wonder. Many legends also tell us that Bezděz is not only a place of miracles, but also a place where the muse will visit you. The ethereal appearance of the castle is absolutely unrivaled.
The first mention of the castle comes from the 13th century, when the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II. he used the dominant hill and had a solid stone castle built on it to defend the trade route and against the expansion of neighboring families. Today, the castle is one of the most important monuments in the Czech Republic.

A large part of the fortification walls, the Devil's Tower have been preserved and you can also see the area of ​​the upper castle. You can see the ruins yourself with an explanation in hand or with a guide.

Bezděz is also very well known due to the fact that the later King Wenceslas II was imprisoned here. with his mother Kunhuta.
Surroundings

From Bezděz you will have an exceptional view, so do not forget the binoculars at home. You will see Mácha's Lake, Bernštejn Castle, Houska Castle, Trosky, or the former Ralsko military area and a tank shooting range between Bělá p. Bezděz and Kuřívody. If you have time, visit the beautiful rock formations that are located near Bezděz.

Every year, the popular Hrady cz festival takes place under Bezděz.
