Church of St. John the Baptist with a bell tower in Slavoňov

The church whose pictures you look at looked different when it was built in the middle of the 14th century. However, because he has not survived, its appearance cannot be determined with certainty. Today's one dates from 1553 and was originally dedicated to St. Martin. It was renamed at the time of re-Catholicization, more precisely in 1683. At that time, St. John the Baptist.

The sanctuary is surrounded by a cemetery, hidden behind a thick wall, lined with massive centuries-old linden trees. It bears elements of folk baroque and is timbered. But it is not only beautiful on the outside. The interiors were decorated by Eliáš and Jindřich Kohllerová in 1705. It is worth noting the murals, a wooden coffered ceiling and a carved bar, resting on six decorative columns. Visitors can see here either during a regular service or with the help of helpful people from a nearby rectory. Their helpfulness knows no bounds and they are always ready to be at the hands of every enthusiast.

The cemetery includes a bell tower from 1555 and a timbered morgue. However, it dates back to the 18th century. The bell tower is the most valuable building in Slavoňov and the whole wider area and is interesting in that the lower part forms a kind of entrance gate to the bowels of the cemetery. It is finished with a conical roof and bears a number of Renaissance elements.

We invite you for a walk, starting in Nové Město nad Metují. The yellow sign will take you through the Klopotov valley and you will find yourself right at the cemetery wall. Then all you have to do is enter and hold your breath over one of the monuments of Central European significance at all.
