Žižkov Television Tower

The Žižkov transmitter is located in the Prague 3- Žižkov district at an altitude of 256 meters. Its construction took place between 1985 and 1992. It is a reinforced concrete transmitter, which offers tourists a viewing platform at a height of 93 meters. The total height of the Žižkov transmitter is 215 meters.

You can get here by public transport, for example, from the Olšanské náměstí tram stop or you can use line A of the Prague metro and get off at the Jiřího z Poděbrad station.

The viewing platform can be reached by a lift traveling at a speed of 4.2 m / sec. The staircase is only emergency and has a total of 736 steps.

From the viewing platform there is a beautiful view of Prague and its surroundings to a distance of about 100 km.

The Žižkov transmitter is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Žižkov transmitter, located in Mahlerovy sady in Prague 3, is the tallest building in the city. It measures a total of 216 meters and its construction was discussed as early as 1978, but construction did not begin until 7 years later. The building was designed by architects Jiří Kozák, Alex Bém and Václav Aulický. The Žižkov transmitter began to fulfill its function on February 18, 1992. Thanks to him, the transmitter on Petřín, which was used until 1953 to broadcast a television signal, ceased its activities. The complete steel structure weighs 2850 tons. The weight of the tower is 11800 tons. The construction consists of three tubes. The first one is used for two passenger lifts, the second has a freight elevator and the third has a staircase. The basis of the Žižkov tower is a reinforced concrete slab with a diameter of 30 meters.

The building offers a total of three observation cabins, located at a height of 93 meters, from where there is a beautiful view of the whole of Prague. The scenic restaurant is located at a height of 62 meters, there is also a cafe and lounge.

On May 29, 2000, ten black statues of babies by sculptor David Černý were placed on the mantle of the building, in connection with the Prague-European City of Culture project. In the same year, they were uninstalled again and in October 2001 re-installed on the tubes of the Žižkov transmitter.

The Žižkov transmitter also entered the Guinness Book of Records, thanks to Josef Dressler, who jumped to the 13th floor in almost 20 minutes on a bicycle trial in 1994, thus setting a world record.

At present, the tower is owned by České Radiokomunikace. The tenant is the Prague company Oreathea s r.o., which in 2011 built an outdoor garden next to the restaurant. Above the restaurant, where the lounge has been located so far, there is a so-called one room hotel. It is an apartment designed, for example, for important state visits or newlyweds, etc. The observation cabins have also been given a new look, highly modern and, above all, interactive. There are touch screens that describe all the important sights and points that visitors from the Žižkov Tower will see. In addition, visitors will be able to listen to the sounds of Prague in special chairs, such as the bells of the Cathedral of St. Welcome or clink of tram, etc.
