Šelmberk

The ruins of Šelmberk Castle can offer you unexpected experiences - both in the castle itself and in the forecourt you will see medieval craft workshops that are functional. You can see a smithy, a shooting range, a herb garden, a banquet hall, a pottery kiln or a bread oven. All this thanks to the incorporation of the castle ruins into the Historical and Craft Education Center Šelmberk, which is operated by the DANAR association.

What you can do at the castle
Both you and your children will enjoy the fun at Šelmberk Castle. Cultural and educational programs are focused on the history of the castle and the history of crafts. You can not only get acquainted with various craft techniques and fencing, but also take part in some of the historical games or taste the dishes of the castle's medieval cuisine. Bat Nights are also very popular, when you get to the castle tower in the dark.

Fun and education in one place
The ruins of Šelmberk will fascinate you with their history. The original castle dates from the 13th century and has undergone many changes of ownership. In the 16th century, there was already a Renaissance palace, which fell into disrepair throughout the 17th century. Later owners had the castle repaired and renovated, romantic style adjustments were made and a game park was established. After the Second World War, the ruins of the castle fell to the town of Mladá Vožica. At present, the castle is managed by the civic association DANAR, which wants to set up an exhibition focused on the construction of castles and their functions, to show the inhabitants and life at the castle.

The ruins are shrouded in a special legend
There are many legends about Šelmberk Castle, one of the most popular is about strange light phenomena that have appeared above the castle several times in the past. This story has several versions - from the oldest about a flying burning child, a car, a bicycle, a barrel, in short, a glowing fiery object, which today would be called a UFO. These light phenomena allegedly appeared from the very foundation of the castle.
