Mikulov Castle

Have you set out to explore interesting castle residences in the territory of our republic? You can also look forward to a nice environment and exposition at the Mikulov chateau, which was built on the rocky Zámecký vrch. A Romanesque castle originally stood on the site of today's Baroque chateau under the Přemyslids. The other owners were the Liechtensteins, who ruled here until 1560 and during this period took care of the Gothic appearance of the building. Financial problems forced them to sell.

Interesting facts Mikulov Castle

The Hungarian nobleman Ladislav Kereczeny, as the new owner, embarked on the reconstruction into a Baroque chateau, in which the Dietrichštejns actively continued from 1575. A fire broke out in 1719 and the chateau burned down, but it was still rebuilt and the Dietrichsteins lived here until 1945. In that year, the chateau burned down again during the liberation. In later years, the architect Otakar Oplatek took over the construction and the building acquired its current appearance.

One of the interesting events at the chateau is the stay of Perchta of Rožmberk in the 15th century. In 1645, the Swedes looted the castle and the town and looted the castle library. Maximilian of Dietrichstein had a wine barrel with a volume of about 1014 hectoliters, which was the largest Central European wine barrel, put in the cellar.

The castle actually has two courtyards, separated by a connecting corridor. The court of honor used to be in a courtyard further north. At present, you can see a Gothic well from the 13th century with a depth of up to fifty meters and interesting sculptural decoration. In other areas of the chateau complex you will find a tower with an octagonal chapel, a stone tower with an edge, a wine cellar, a riding school and outbuildings. The chateau houses the expositions of the Regional Museum in Mikulov.

The castle often hosts interesting cultural events as well as the very popular traditional vintage, because it is located in the famous wine region Pavlovské vrchy. The castle complex is complemented by an advanced defensive tower, called Kozí hrádek. At present, the tower serves as a viewpoint and is open to the public.
