Častolovice (chateau)

One of the gems of castle architecture in our country can be found near Kostelec nad Orlicí, southwest of Rychnov nad Kněžnou. The site of today's chateau was originally a water fortress, which the Renaissance chateau did not replace until around 1600. The layout was a one-storey building without towers with a square courtyard and a floor plan to the letter "U". The left part occupied the manor rooms, the facade was decorated with frescoes and in the right part of the castle were the utility rooms.

Interesting facts Častolovice (chateau)

However, the original core was rebuilt in later years, for example during a not very suitable reconstruction, in the spirit of Tudor Gothic, whose features are still visible in the orangery.

Leopold from Šternberk undertook a radical reconstruction at the beginning of the last century. The intention was to restore the chateau to its original appearance, to increase the number of rooms suitable for living, for which the premises of the former economic part were used. The entrance façade and the façade, which acquired the original Renaissance shapes and sgraffito, were also modified.

The interior of the chateau in Častolovice is especially proud of the main hall with the Corpus Christi Chapel, which is adjoined by three rooms, in which coffered ceilings with painted panels have been preserved.

The current owner of the chateau in Častolovice is Diana Sternberková, who made it possible to make part of the interior of the chateau and the surrounding park with a menagerie accessible. In the west wing there are about 15 rooms dedicated to the exhibition, acquainting visitors with the way of life of the nobility from the Renaissance, through the Baroque, Empire, to the Biedermeier, until about the middle of the 19th century. On the ground floor of the chateau there is a sales picture gallery and a chateau restaurant. Those interested can rent certain spaces in the chateau on the occasion of a wedding.
