Hrubý Rohozec

Welcome to Turnov, the gateway to the Bohemian Paradise. When we set off from the square along the Castle Trail through the Jizera Valley, around Dlask's farm in Dolánky, we come to the castle moat, which is connected to the park where the Hrubý Rohozec castle stands. It offers us a true insight into the life of the nobility in the first half of the 20th century.

Interesting facts Hrubý Rohozec

The original Rohozec castle was founded around 1280 by the Markvartice family in a rock above the river Jizera. It was a free-standing prismatic tower, connected to the castle by a defensive wall. In 1516, a late Gothic palace was completed between the two parts, and so the castle got its present floor plan. At the beginning of the 17th century, it was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau. Until then, it was owned by the Vartenberk family, but because they took part in the estate uprising, their property was confiscated after the Battle of Bílá Hora, and in 1623 it was bought by Albý of Wallenstein, Hrubý Rohozec. After only five years, the chateau and the surrounding estate were donated to Mikuláš Des Fours, whose descendants will remain here for more than three centuries. It deserves its Baroque, empirical and subsequently romantic adaptation. In 1945 it was expropriated by the state on the basis of Beneš's decrees, and in 2011 the Semily District Court decided to extradite it in restitution to the heiress of the last owner, Johanna Kammerlanderová.

During the tour we will visit the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, two libraries, lounges and suites of the count and the countess. The chateau dining room boasts valuable paintings of the walls and ceiling in the Romantic Gothic style, while the rooms on the second floor are painted in the Rococo style. The interiors are presented in their original form from the 1930s, including furniture, porcelain and paintings.

Around the chateau there is a smaller chateau park with several rare trees, statues of saints from the 18th and 19th centuries and with an artificial cave above the cliff, from where there is a beautiful view of the surroundings.

If you come here during the Advent season, you will be surprised by the Christmas-decorated castle interiors. The castle also hosts nightly costumed tours or tours of normally inaccessible areas. In the castle chapel of the Holy Trinity or in the castle park, it is possible to organize a wedding ceremony.

Hrubý Rohozec State Castle is one of the many reasons to visit the Bohemian Paradise. In its vicinity, however, there are many other castles, chateaux and ruins that are worth a visit. In addition to historic buildings, there is beautiful nature with unusual rocky formations. Simply paradise it at a glance.
