Horazdovice (chateau)

The first mention of Horažďovice comes from 1251. Two decades later, we come across sources that speak of the construction of city fortifications and the construction of a castle. It was built in the Gothic style and the main building became a prismatic palace with a tower that slightly exceeded it. The first owners of the Bavarians from Strakonice were responsible for the creation of this building.

Interesting facts Horazdovice (chateau)

The seat was transformed into a Renaissance chateau during the reign of the Švihovskýs of Rýzmberk, and in the years 1681 - 1692 they completed its current form with the Baroque adaptations of the Šternberks. These reconstructions meant that the castle courtyard was surrounded by two-storey buildings, which, however, did not reduce the area of such a small courtyard too much. There were very well-kept gardens in the vicinity of the chateau, but these have not been preserved to this day.

The homestead is currently used as a city museum. It includes a chateau with a large hall, a baroque chapel and several lounges with frescoes. It then continues with rooms where visitors can learn about life in the Horažďovice region in the times of mammoth hunters, but also in medieval times. The part documenting the fates of the Jewish population across all periods is also interesting.

The town, named after St. Gorazd, the successor of Methodius, is small, but with the river Otava it invites you to visit every lover of times long gone.
