Interesting facts Lány (castle)

It is the year 1392, King Wenceslas IV, the son of Charles IV, rules in Bohemia, and Mr. Hašek from the Kladenský family from Kladno resides on a wooden fortress in Lány. One of the other owners is the Zejdlice family, which builds a stone fortress in the Renaissance style on the site of a wooden fortress. The later owner, Bořita from Martinice, sold the fortress and Lány to Emperor Rudolf II. He transforms the fortress into a hunting lodge, which will undergo another transformation in the middle of the 17th century, this time in the Baroque style. The building is undergoing a fundamental change and expansion at a time when it is owned by the Wallenstein family.

The appearance of the chateau was most significantly influenced by the Fürstenberks, who acquired it at the beginning of the 18th century. In the course of less than two hundred years, the chateau has grown to its current form. The main building becomes a three-storey landmark of a large park and is connected by an above-ground access with a newly built Rococo church. A neo-Gothic stables building is also being built. In addition to the main buildings, for example, a greenhouse, apiaries and outbuildings are built. All this is sensitively connected by landscaping.

Josiph Plečnik, who was the court architect of Prague Castle during the First Republic, has a significant share in the beauty and functionality of this residence. After the state bought the chateau in 1921, J. Plečnik designed and realized the last significant reconstruction of the Lány chateau and the chateau park according to Masaryk's instructions. At that time, thanks to the simplicity and purity of style, the chateau acquires the dignified character of a representative resting place of the newly formed republic.

His representativeness is somewhat taken over when Prague Castle and the state leadership are taken over by the ruling party of the pre-revolutionary period.

At present, however, the chateau has gradually regained its dignity and beauty. Only the park is freely accessible from spring to autumn. The castle interiors have been made accessible only a few times in their history. So far, the last time was in 2012.

If you don't want to wait maybe a few more years for a chance to see spaces interesting in their history, architecture and symbolism, look for the documentary Ten Centuries of Architecture on the Czech Television website. One of the parts is dedicated to the Lány chateau.
