The Teplice Botanical Garden is the only botanical garden in the Ústí nad Labem region. It was founded on January 1, 2002 and was not created at a random location. This area has been used for horticultural purposes for almost 100 years.

History of the botanical garden

The beginnings of this garden date back to the end of the 19th century. Historical documents speak of this place as a Stadtgärtnerei, ie urban horticulture. The original greenhouses were mainly used by local spas, such as wintering palm trees or producing cut flowers. Thanks to Ing. Marie Sternthal was reconstructed in the early 1970s and also made accessible in March 1975. At that time, they still fell under the Technical Services of the city, which were primarily to provide greenery in city parks.

When the garden was officially established, there were about 2,000 species of plants. Almost half of them were planted in an outdoor exhibition on an area of about 1 ha. Most of them were occupied by tropical and subtropical or greenhouse species. All expositions were created more or less in emergency conditions, but even so, the workers managed to build a garden, which was worth seeing at the time of its beginnings.

Rare plant species:

- Afrocarpus (Podocarpus) gracilior - Ancient African Conifer
- Encephalartos villosus
- Medinilla magnifica - huge specimen from the Philippines
- Dasylirion serratifolium - Mexican specimen

TIP: In a tropical greenhouse, don't forget to notice the crossbeds. There are plants planted in it, the names of which you will know from mysteries and crossword puzzles.

The garden is open daily to the public except Mondays.
