Cave At Spicak

The Na Špičáku cave passes through the Velký Špičák hill, which lies in the Supíkovická hills, north of the town of Jeseník. The first mention of it comes from the year 1430 and according to the number of historical inscriptions on the walls it was very popular. It was opened to the public only in 1885 and thus it is one of the longest accessible caves in our country.

Interesting facts Cave At Spicak

As with most other caves, water contributed to this. By dissolving the calcite, the pulins gradually expanded and underground channels were formed. Under these conditions, today the underground system would be formed by fissure corridors impenetrable to humans. In the last ice age, 150 thousand years ago, but the northern continental glacier reached our territory. It was this that significantly influenced the further development of the cave. During the warming and gradual retreat of the glacier, significantly more aggressive glacial water caused the expansion of underground cavities. It most actively dissolved the limestone at the surface of the lakes, which gave the corridors an unusual heart-shaped profile and created a significant horizontal level of ceilings and niches throughout the system. This phenomenon is unparalleled in our country and in other countries it occurs very rarely.

Na Špičáku Cave cannot be proud of its rich stalactite decoration. Many of them were destroyed by its visitors over the centuries, but sinter sleeves on the walls and parts of the floors as well as small stalactites and curtains in the niches have been preserved. There is a small sinter lake in the Great Dome. However, the current rapid creation of new stalactite formations is remarkable. So far, these are thin straws and small curtains. There is also the occurrence of nickamínek, which is a white slurry, unconsolidated sinter. It grows relatively quickly on the walls and ceilings of some corridors and thus beautifies the cave with white coatings and the formation of aggregates of cauliflower shapes.

As in other caves, bats found their wintering ground here, a total of 7 species were counted. The lake, not far from the east of the cave, is inhabited by great newt and mountain newt.
As one of the few, it offers a barrier-free circuit 220 m long, which you can walk in 30 minutes.
