Interesting facts The tower of the Old Town Hall in Brno

The core of the town hall with a tower was built as early as 1240. The appearance of the building was then shaped over the centuries by numerous building modifications and extensions. The town hall served its purposes for centuries, the town council and courts met here, important guests were received, important documents, seals and money were stored, and in part a prison was established. The capacity of the town hall eventually ceased to be sufficient for the town in the first half of the 20th century, so in 1935 it was moved to the larger premises of the Provincial House on Dominikánské náměstí. This house has since been called the New Town Hall and the original one has been nicknamed the Old Town Hall. Today, it houses a tourist information center and gallery, cultural events take place in the Renaissance courtyard during the summer, and visitors in the season are also attracted by the view from the tower or a tour of the historic areas of Ernov, Crystal and Fresco Hall and Jewelery. In the passage from Radniční Street to the courtyard you will find two symbols of famous legends, the Brno bicycle and the dragon. Note also the beautiful decoration of the entrance portal of the town hall, which was penetrated in the years 1510-1511 by the architect, sculptor and builder Antonín Pilgram. Typical for him is the curved middle tower, which was said to be revenge for councilors for not paying the entire promised reward.

The town hall tower is 62.66 meters high and 173 steps lead to the observation deck. In the tower you will also see a clockwork and an exhibition on the history of the Old Town Hall. The observation deck of the tower is accessible to visitors every day from April to October, during the winter the tower is closed.
