Orlík Reservoir

The construction of the dam began in 1954 and lasted until 1961. A deep river valley was chosen, which was considered by many to be one of the most beautiful, but had to give way to development. A total of ten municipalities and settlements were also flooded. The dam measures 450 meters and in its left part at the foot there is a hydroelectric power plant. The height in the crown of the dam reaches 91 meters and the road leads here. Another important road leads over the Žďák Bridge, which connects both banks of the dam and thus connects the road between the towns of Tábor and Písek. This bridge and with it the whole dam was notorious for the affair of the so-called eagle murders, when barrels of corpses were thrown to the bottom of the dam. However, the bridge is mainly interesting because it is the largest single-arch bridge without a drawbar in the world.

The dam got its name from the Orlík chateau, which rose high above the valley before it was filled, but today it is barely a few meters above the water level. But be sure not to miss a tour of it, you will see, among other things, the best example of the Empire style in the Czech Republic. The second sought-after destination on the bank of the dam is Zvíkov Castle, which is considered one of the most beautiful Czech castles. To move between the two destinations, you can use boat transport on the dam, the line runs directly Orlík Castle - Zvíkov Castle. In addition, of course, you can go on sightseeing cruises.

Orlická dam also serves recreation to a large extent, in its vicinity you will find many campsites and other accommodation facilities, you can swim, fish, enjoy water sports and other entertainment.

There are many hiking trails around the dam that will take you to the most interesting. The trails meander along the rocky slopes, which fall sharply into the flooded valley. It offers romantic views and nature that breathes peace.
