There are countless lookout towers in the Děčín region, and one of them is the lookout tower below Velký Chlum. In 1879, the Mountain Association for Bohemian Switzerland was responsible for the construction of a tourist cottage in the neighboring Malý Chlum. The cottage also served a bit like a lookout tower. Its roof was used by tourists as a lookout point.
It was this cottage with a view that enjoyed great attendance, so the mountain association began to think about its expansion and the construction of a real lookout tower. The original intention was to build a stone lookout tower, but for financial reasons it was built of wood and ceremoniously opened on November 20, 1898.

The local section of the GVSB came up with a proposal to build a lookout tower near Chlum, which was finally built in 1928-29. Quarry stone and concrete blocks were used as the material. The project was developed by architect Jahnel. The ceremonial opening of the lookout tower with a total height of 16 meters took place on May 18, 1930. After 1945, interest in the lookout tower declined and the tower was equipped with transmitters. Only the first gallery of the lookout tower, which offered a very bad view, served as a lookout tower.

The repair of the lookout tower was not expected until 1996-97. At that time, the antennas were removed and a roof was placed on the upper observation deck. The reopening of the lookout tower took place on July 12, 1997.
