Museum of Civil Defense Ústí nad Labem

The unique system of corridors in which the Museum of Civil Defense is located today was built in a former anti-aircraft shelter from 1942, which was later structurally modified to an atomic shelter. The temperature in the underground corridors is kept at 12 ° C all year round and the humidity is 85%.

The total length of the accessible corridors of the shelter is 0.5 km and 250 m of the original galleries, which are not yet fully accessible yet and which opened only after 70 years. However, visitors are allowed to get acquainted with how the construction of the galleries took place. The construction of the shelter was attended by prisoners of war and volunteers, who managed to set off a total of 750 m of galleries. The conversion to the atomic cover of CO III. Class took place between 1952 and 1956.

The Museum of Civil Defense in Ústí nad Labem has an extensive collection of gas masks manufactured from 1920 to the present, various technical attractions, a functional air conditioning machine, radio, telephone exchange, medical room and various objects found in the galleries and their surroundings.

The museum organizes military days for schools, during which children have to complete various tasks, they can shoot themselves from an air rifle, try throwing a grenade or take first aid courses.

Around the middle of World War II, the imperial order came to build shelters of resistance class I throughout the territory of the protectorate. The anti-aircraft cover of the civil defense began to be built in Ústí nad Labem in 1942, in the places where today we find the Větruše excursion restaurant.

Since 2007, the underground has belonged to a private owner, and since 2012, a group of enthusiasts has been building the Museum of Civil Defense here. The museum is open all year round with different times during the summer and winter seasons. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and due to the low temperatures it is recommended to bring warm clothes with you.
