Interesting facts Monument to Adalbert Stifter

The Stifter Memorial can be found on the northwestern shore of Plešné Lake in the picturesque Šumava region. It is located at an altitude of 1,311 meters below the top of Plechý. It was built between 1876 and 1877 and has the shape of a slender obelisk with a height of 14.5 meters. Local granite was used for its construction.

Directly from the platform at the monument is an impressive view of the surrounding countryside and especially of Plešné Lake.

The authors of the Stifter Memorial were stonemasons Adolf Paleczek, Johan and Franz Saumer, Josef Schröderer and Franz Stiny. The initials of their names were engraved by stonemasons in blocks below the observation deck at the monument. Over time, when one of the authors of the monument died, Franz Saumer ascended to this place and always blacked out the appropriate initials. After he himself died in 1937, his initials were not blackened.

The Adalbert Stifter Memorial was ceremoniously unveiled on August 26, 1877

How to get to the monument?

From the top of Plechý, a hiking trail marked in yellow leads to the Adalbert Stifter monument.

In 2006, an adventure trail called Spirit of the Forest was opened, which will also take you to the monument, but it is a bit steeper and shorter. The trail is not marked as touristy.
