Interesting facts Memorial to the Victims of Communism Liberec

This monument is located in a park in Jablonecká Street, de facto directly opposite the Liebieg Castle, which can be reached directly from the Harcovská Dam.

The Liberec monument, unlike the Prague one, was unveiled in 2006. The work takes the form of a very simple monumental block measuring 3.2 x 4.5 x 0.7 m, which is provided on both sides with mirror sheets of 18 mm thick plated glass. One board weighs 800 kg. The mirrors are inserted into a steel frame. At the foot of the monument, a mirror-inverted inscription readable in the reflection is embedded in the pavement: "Look for yourself whether you are defending, honoring or restricting freedom."

The work also includes three 10-meter park benches made of glued wood.

The memorial was created by the architectural office SPORADICAL and the authors are Petr Janda, Aleš Kubalík, Josef Kocián and Jakub Našinec. It is interesting that the first two authors also submitted a joint proposal for the Prague Memorial.

Some may argue that this is a completely simple thing, but it has tremendous power. The monument is minimalist and purely deliberate… to emphasize even more the purity of the soul, the weight of conscience, innocence, and also whether the person in question can look at himself in the mirror. Sometimes it's just useless to use too many words.

It's just a matter of being able to read a little between the lines…
