The altitude of this basalt mountain is 456 meters and it can be seen in the vicinity from a great distance. It is also an important place because there is one of the most famous Romanesque rotundas in our country, the rotunda of St. George, built in 1126 by Prince Soběslav I to commemorate the victorious battle of Chlumec. Before that, however, there was a smaller church, which was expanded and repaired by this monarch. The rotunda was already a popular place of pilgrimage in the past and currently a number of marches, processes and parades are heading to the top of Říp Mountain.
Table Mountain Říp has a typical shape resembling a bell and the top part is elliptical. During the Tertiary period, this peak was a volcano about 1 km higher than the current mountain. The lower height of the mountain was caused by gradual weathering and movements of thick rubble layers.
Mount Říp is not significant in terms of height, however, historically it is one of the most important places. From the top there is a view of the whole third of Bohemia and the mountain itself can be seen from a distance, because it stands out significantly from the low panorama of the Elbe lowlands. One of the stones used to build the National Theater comes from Mount Říp.
