According to a source idnes.cz, the Dlouhé Stráně hydroelectric power plant is one of the seven greatest wonders of the Czech Republic. It is also one of the most important Czech monuments, for example alongside such pearls as Hluboká nad Vltavou or Karlštejn, although it is a technical monument, and in 2005 it also became the biggest wonder of our republic when citizens vote.

Dlouhé Stráně is the third largest pumped storage power plant in the world. In the Czech Republic, Dlouhé Stráně has the largest drop compared to other hydropower plants, and in addition it also has the largest output and the largest reversible water turbine in the whole of Europe.

The construction of the power plant began in 1978, while during the 80's the construction work went into decline and in 1985 the building was modernized. The decision to complete the construction was made only after 1989. The power plant was then put into operation in 1996.

Tour of the power plant

The power plant is currently open to visitors by prior arrangement. The tour includes acquaintance with technological operations located in large underground spaces. The route also includes the lower and upper reservoir, located at an altitude of 1,350 meters on Mount Mravenečník. A film focusing on this unique water work is screened in the Visitor Center, in addition to which there is also a model that also captures a cross-section of the underground power plant.

How to order?

Orders for a tour of the Dlouhé Stráně hydroelectric power plant are made online, preferably at least three weeks before the inspection date. The tour must then be paid for within 3 working days at the latest, otherwise it will be canceled. After the visitor pays for the tour, he will receive a confirmation of payment by e-mail, which he must then print out and come with him to the place where the whole excursion starts, ie the Kouty bus stop, preferably 15 minutes before the start of the tour.
