The visitor can go through two sightseeing tours in the Paper Museum, during which he is introduced to the traditional production of handmade paper, several technical attractions and the history of the craft. Handmade paper is still produced here in its original premises, as it was four hundred years ago. In addition, during the high season, visitors can try to make their own sheets of paper or take part in one of the exhibitions in the gallery.

History of handmade paper mill

The town of Velké Losiny is one of the most visited places in the foothills of the Jeseník Mountains. We can find them in the direction north of Šumperk and in addition to the handmade paper mill, they are also known for the local castle.

The local handmade paper mill was founded on the estate of the lords of Žerotín at the end of the 16th century on the site of a former grain mill by Jan the Younger from Žerotín. Production began sometime between 1591 and 1596.

The history of the paper mill also came into connection with the infamous inquisition processes that took place here. In 1680, one of the first victims of witch trials in Velké Losiny was Barbora Göttlicherová, the wife of a Losin paper mill.

In 1729, a Dutchman, a revolutionary invention used to prepare pulp, and the first device of this type in Moravia were acquired for the paper mill.

In 1949, the paper mill became part of the national company Olšanské papírny and since 2006 it has been the seat of the independent company Ruční papírna Velké Losiny a.s.

At present, the handmade paper mill in Velké Losiny is one of the oldest companies of its kind in Europe. Cotton, flax and traditional production methods are still used here for the production of handmade paper. The paper is extremely high quality and durable, thanks to which it is widely used in art, corporate correspondence, bibliophilia, restoration or for representational purposes.

Since 2002, the handmade paper mill in Velké Losiny has been a national cultural monument.
