Primda Castle

When you have already found yourself in the Tachov district, you will certainly visit the town of Přimda, above which rises the ruins of one of our oldest stone castles. It dates from the early 12th century and represents early Romanesque architecture. The castle is probably of German origin, not similar to Czech buildings from this period, but strikingly reminiscent of period Bavarian buildings. The remains of a Romanesque residential tower and the castle bastion invite you not only to see the ruins, but also to look into the beautiful surrounding landscape of the Bohemian Forest.

Interesting facts Primda Castle

The type of castle comes from France
In Přimda you can see the remains of fortifications and prismatic towers. The castle prison was located on the ground floor of the tower, the other two floors were intended for living. On the first floor there was a fireplace, the remains of which can be seen. This type of castle in the form of a residential tower spread to Europe from France. An extension was built next to the tower, in which a medieval toilet - prevét - has been preserved. This is the oldest surviving translation in our country.

Přimda Castle is mentioned in the Cosmos Chronicle
If you admire really old castles, Přimda is very attractive for you. The Romanesque castle on the top of the Přimda hill was built at the beginning of the 12th century and is already mentioned in the Cosmos Chronicle. Přemyslid Prince Vladislav conquered this castle and Přimda became the guard castle of the Czech Kingdom. It was also used as a customs house on the trade route from Nuremberg, which required the reconstruction and strengthening of defense measures. During the reign of the Přemyslids, Přimda experienced its greatest prosperity. In the following years, the castle was used as a pledge and became a ruin at the end of the 16th century.

The rumor about the origin of the castle may be true
Are you romantic? The legend of the origin of the castle will enchant you. According to legend, Přimda Castle was secretly built in the Czech forests by a German count, who fell in love with the emperor's daughter. They entered into a secret marriage and fled to the castle of Přimda. After a few years, the emperor got lost on the hunt and got as far as Přimda. He stayed here as a guest for several days and when he saw that the couple was happy together, he forgave them and they all returned to the court. The castle then remained abandoned. At least a piece of this legend may be true - the castle was actually secretly built by a German nobleman, the rest remains on the imagination of visitors.
