Interesting facts Castle ruins Kamýk

The nearby Vltava Cascades attract many visitors a year, and many of them may not even know that there is an interesting castle ruin near them. It is called Kamýk and you can find it in the immediate vicinity of the Kamýk reservoir.

The significance of the former castle lies primarily in its function, which it previously performed. It was the seat of the oldest Czech monarchs. However, after the construction of Karlštejn Castle, it lost this function. Kamýk was gradually forgotten and began to let go. However, the current architectural condition and torso of the castle allows visitors to get an idea of what it originally looked like here.

The stately residence was built on the site of the original courtyard in the first half of the 13th century. Wenceslas I began the construction and completed it with Přemysl Otakar II. At that time, Czech rulers lived here and engaged in hunting in the surrounding forests and during the reign of Wenceslas II. Kamýk was the seat of a royal hunter. Kamýk was still very important during the reign of John of Luxembourg, however, his son Charles IV. decided to build Karlštejn, probably because of the distance from Prague. Kamýk is located approximately 70 km from the capital. Another theory says that even then Kamýk had unsatisfactory statics and the headland itself provided too cramped space, so the reconstruction would not have such an effect and meaning. The castle was abandoned from the second half of the 14th century and sources in connection with it in 1569 speak of it as a ruin.

In 2007, the Kamýk nad Vltavou project was launched, which began preparatory work that year and continued with archaeological research. Stabilization work followed, the entrance gate of the castle was uncovered and a lot of remains from the Middle Ages were discovered. Today, you can park in the village without any problems and the newly built sidewalks or bike path lead directly to the castle. If you go to Kamýk directly from the village, you will come across an interesting playground, which contains elements that children played with in the Middle Ages. An educational trail leads to the castle.
