Poděbrady

The charming location in the Elbe lowlands on the banks of the river Elbe, only less than 50 km east of Prague, makes Poděbrady an exceptionally picturesque Central Bohemian town, sought after not only by tourists but also by spa patients. In any case, you can admire a number of historical monuments, enjoy healing procedures or cultural events. The spa town of Podebrady attracts visitors throughout the year.

Interesting facts Poděbrady

In the Central Bohemian Region, with a population of more than 13,000, Poděbrady is one of the most important cities. It is therefore not surprising that it is flooded by thousands of visitors every year, especially considering its long history, the peaceful atmosphere of the local colonnades, the pleasant greenery of the local parks or stylish cafes on the banks of the river Elbe.

History of the town

Even before the establishment of the Czech state, there was an important trade route between Prague and Eastern Bohemia, and a settlement called "under the fords" was established near the Elbe ford at this time. The name Poděbrady is mentioned in historical sources only in the second half of the 12th century, but it certainly evolved from the original name of the local settlement.

During the 1960s, Přemysl Otakar II. he had a stone water castle built, which, together with other factors, contributed to an extensive settlement agglomeration in the castle grounds.

Podebrady prospered the most under the leadership of the lords of Kunstat, whose most unknown representative was undoubtedly George of Podebrady, who also played a key role in promoting the settlement to a town in 1472. During the Thirty Years' War, Podebrady was severely damaged, as well as in 1832. devastating fire. Furthermore, the city was allowed to build only of stone.

In 1905, a spring of healing water was drilled in the castle courtyard, and since then Poděbrady has become a spa town.

What can you see here?

During a visit to Poděbrady, it is almost a must to visit the local chateau, the spa park with the famous flower clock, the square with the statue of George of Poděbrady and the Marian column. In the city there is also the Church of the Exaltation of St. Kříže or Havířský kostelík.
