Interesting facts Landštejn castle

The Romanesque core of the castle later expanded with building elements from the late Gothic and Renaissance. Under the Krajířs of Krajek, the castle looked like a spacious three-storey palace with hot-air heating, a new chapel and several Renaissance windows. The Krajířs needed luxurious living in a representative residence for a more comfortable living, which they succeeded in and stayed here until 1579. The inherited estate was sold by Anna Roupovská to Štěpán of Einzig, and later the castle awaited a period when Only the center of economic administration remained.

The starting point for the gradual destruction of the castle was the year 1771, when lightning struck a large tower and a devastating fire broke out. The residential part of the castle was severely damaged and the former famous seat of the nobility became abandoned. The building fell into disrepair and the inhabitants of the surrounding villages turned the castle into a source of building materials. The ruins became a destination for trips and occasional tours were visited by its last private owners - the Sternbachs from Austria. The Austrian count family owned the castle until 1945, when it was expropriated by the state. Landštejn has undergone extensive reconstruction since 1972 and in 1990 it could be opened to the public. During the tour you can admire interesting architecture, an exhibition of archaeological finds, period rooms with objects of everyday life at the time and coins from various periods. Do not miss the ascent to the lookout tower, from where you will have a nice view of the surroundings.
