Interesting facts Kampa - an artificial island in the center of Prague

You may be surprised, but Kampa is actually an artificial island that starts at Charles Bridge and stretches to the Czechoslovak Bridge. Legions. The island has an area of 2.65 hectares and is bordered on one side by the Vltava and on the other by Čertovka. This island existed as early as the twelfth century, when there were mainly mills and mill gardens, which gradually replaced the aristocratic gardens. From the end of the nineteenth century it was then accessible from Charles Bridge. After the Second World War, the local gardens were transformed into a single park.

• It is also worth mentioning that today's Werich House was originally donated by Count Nostic to Josef Dobrovský. That is why his statue stands in front of this house and not Werich's.

• When you are in Kampa, definitely go to the Kampa Museum, where you can admire the collection of modern Central European art by Jan and Meda Mládek. Here you will find the work of František Kupka, Otto Gutfreund and the work of other artists not only from Bohemia and Moravia, but also from neighboring countries.

• Part of the romantic scenery, the scene of many films, legends, myths and fairy tales, is a picturesque and a bit scary Devil. It is an artificial Vltava canal 740 meters long, which was created in the Middle Ages by the Johannites. An amazing local monument is the huge wooden mill wheel at the Velkopřevorský mill. But there are two more mills near Čertovka (Huť mill and Zlomkovský mill).

• Definitely do not miss another picturesque place. It's a bit hidden and you may only see it from the boat when you sail the Devil. It is a bridge that leads to the island from Velkopřevorské náměstí in Malá Strana and it is a place exactly behind the square by the mill wheel and the Kabourek waterman. The bridge is also called the "Bridge of Lovers" because there are locks on the metal railing, but the locks are also located on the bridge U Lužického semináře, which leads under the arch of Charles Bridge. So it doesn't matter, there are simply more such beautiful places in Kampa.
